Provincial Programs: Newfoundland & Labrador
Newfoundland was the tenth and latest to join the Canada in 1949, where it was previously a colony of the UK. Geographically, the province consists of the island of Newfoundland and the mainland Labrador, on Canada's Atlantic coast. As of April 2008, the province's population is estimated to be 508,270, with the larges city being St. John's (the capital) with a population of 180,000 in the metropolitan area.
Up until recently, Newfoundland's economy was largely based on fishing, and to a lesser degree, mining and forestry. Recent advances in technology have allowed it to begin to develop its substantial offshore oil resources. Over the next 20 years, these oil resources will be the engine of the economy in the province.
Newfoundland's immigration program's are modest, and include both a skilled worker component and a limited business component. The province is in the process of considering a new business program.
