Provincial Programs: Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia is the most populous of the 4 Atlantic Provinces, with a population of 935,000, located n Canada's southeastern coast. Halifax is the largest city in the province with a metropolitan area of 282,000 people and is Eastern Canada's largest economic centre. Nova Scotia is the second smallest province in Canada with an area of 55,284 km².
Nova Scotia's economy is traditionally resource-based, in the areas such as fishing, mining, forestry and agriculture. The province has diversified since the middle of the 20th century to include industries such as tourism, technology, film, music and finance. No one industry dominates this small province.
Nova Scotia's economy has not been a major producer of jobs, and as such, has not attracted very many immigrants. Until recently, its immigration policies were largely focused on a unique program, which was for the most part, an alternative to the Federal and Quebec investor programs. New Federal regulations have meant that the program is no longer functional, and the Province is in the middle of looking to develop an alternative.
