Provincial Programs: New Brunswick
New Brunswick is one of the four Atlantic Provinces, with a population of about 750,000. There are no large cities in New Brunswick, with the metropolitan areas of St. John and Moncton each being approximately 120,000. The capital is Fredericton, which has a population of about 80,000 people.
New Brunswick's urban areas have modern, service-based economies dominated by the health care, educational, retail, finance and insurance sectors. These sectors are reasonably equitably distributed in all three principal urban centres. In addition, heavy industry and port facilities are found in Saint John, Fredericton is dominated by government services, universities, and the military and Moncton has developed as a commercial, retail, transportation, and distribution centre with important rail and air terminal facilities. The rural primary economy is best known for forestry, mining, mixed farming and fishing.
Immigration numbers to New Brunswick are modest, with current levels just over 1,600 in each of the last two years. This is, however, up substantially up from previous years (doubled since 2004), largely due to their successful Provincial Nominee Program.
